[INR.1.3.EU: European examples and instruments for effective adaptation to climate change]

Session description:
Climate change is no longer tomorrow’s problem. Its negative impacts are already affecting areas all around the world, for instance through an increased frequency of extreme weather events such as storms, drought and floods. This has of course significant consequences on water resources. However, exact climate change impacts are still very uncertain.
Therefore, possible climate change impacts and climate variability should be considered and addressed when elaborating water and climate strategies, discussing plans and considering actions to be included in programmes of measures.
But how to integrate such constraints is far from being self-evident. Exchanges of experiences, good practices and lessons learned between Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Mediterranean region may help find solutions related to the specific contexts witnessed at local level, where no one-size-fits-all can address the issues faced. From the islands of the Caribbean to the arid Mediterranean region and the melting of alpine glaciers, this day will present good examples that can boost climate adaptation throughout the world.

Convenors:
International Office for Water (IOWater)
Mexican Institute of Water Technology (IMTA)
ECOWAS
International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE)
UNECE
